USDX Dollar Index Analysis

Dollar Index Technical Update 26/11/11The dollar index is close to a test of the 4/10/11 swing point at 79.83 with the current weekly high printed on Friday at 79.69.  There has been a major shift to the dollar in recent times due to the euro-zone debt crisis and this has brought the USDX back close to this key 80.00 level.  A look at the monthly line chart shows how significant the area has been historically and price action at these levels should provide further insight into the strength of the dollar.

Starting out with the monthly timeframe candle chart (as shown below) we can see how price has interacted with the 80.00 level (red dashed line) since the first hit in 1991.

Dollar Index Technical Update 26/11/11

  • A look at the current USDX weekly chart shows the previous reaction to this area gave a drop to the 75.00 level.
  • The weekly candle which is almost a Marabuzo where the open is equal to the low, and the close is equal to the high is looking USDX bullish.
  • Any move through the price structure highs and psych level at 80.00 could potentially see some kind of resistance and it is certainly not a given that price will continue the strong uptrend through this area; price action should be monitored for any signs of weakness.
  • Any break above 80.00 could potentially see initial resistance near 80.65 (50% ret of the last swing) and further to this a range of potential technical resistance between 82.50 > 82.90 which is the 61.8% retrace and price pivot level shown on the W1 chart.
  • Potential support is seen at 78.79 (price pivot) and further to this around 78.00.  Fibs can be added once a near term high is in place.
