The newly appointed Monti government will have its hands full in a difficult economic and market environment. While the limits of debt sustainability have not been reached yet, in our view, confidence is a crucial element to prevent any self-fulfilling prophecy, such as a buyers' strike, from materialising. More political stability definitely helps, as well as an often overlooked strength and size of the balance sheet of the household sector. We look at all these issues from several perspectives.
Germany is No Longer a Safe Haven

Last week we wrote about „cracks in the core? (seeCracks in the core, 18 November 2011). France has been under pressure since early October and in mid-November Finland and Holland were also hit. Then this week it happened. The German sovereign bond market is now also feeling the heat of the market turmoil. Until now, Germany has been regarded as a safe haven. However, a failed 10-year Bund auction on Wednesday spooked investors and led to selling of German government bonds.
